Combustion

Research Overview

Staged pressurized oxy-coal combustion (SPOC) technology has been demonstrated to reduce the cost and energy penalties associated with carbon capture. To help design the scaled-up SPOC systems, we focus on the study of the resultant particle size distribution in pressurized combustion systems as a function of various operating conditions. This is important for several reasons: a) establishing the governing radiative heat transfer which is a function of particle size and other optical properties; b) the fouling characteristics of the resultant ash particles with a range of size dependent compositions; c) capture efficiencies of the downstream particulate control systems and the optimal operating conditions to minimize emissions
